Bedroom Beat-Making Starter

beginner

This tier optimizes for getting a first beat finished, not for maximizing any single spec. It's built around someone who wants to record one source at a time, program ideas on pads, and learn arrangement without drowning in routing or room problems. Every choice here is about removing the early excuses that stall beginners.

The Focusrite Scarlett Solo (4th Gen) covers exactly one mic and one instrument input, which is all a solo bedroom producer needs and keeps the interface cheaper and simpler than a two-input box you wouldn't fill yet. The AKAI MPK Mini MK3 puts pads, keys, and assignable knobs under one hand so you can finger-drum and tweak without reaching for the mouse, trading the deeper playability of full-size keys for portability and price. Ableton Live 12 Intro is chosen as the DAW because its Session View is the fastest path to looping ideas, with the understood limit that Intro caps track and device counts. The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x is a closed-back monitoring headphone, the right call when an untreated bedroom would color open headphones or open monitors, and the Auralex Studiofoam Wedgies tackle first-reflection slap rather than pretending to fix low end.

Upgrade this first: move from Live 12 Intro to a higher Live edition once the Intro track and device ceiling starts blocking arrangements, since the project files carry straight over. Downgrade to save: the Auralex Studiofoam Wedgies are the most optional piece here because the ATH-M40x already lets you mix on headphones, so a smaller foam pack or skipping it initially won't sink the build.

Who this is NOT for: anyone needing to track multiple inputs at once, like a live band or a singer-plus-guitarist setup, since the single-input Scarlett Solo and the entry-level scope make this a one-source-at-a-time studio.
